Dr Kumar Narayan joined CSIRO Land and Water
in Adelaide in March 1991, transferring to the Tropical Land and Water
Management research program in Townsville in August 2001. He is currently
with the River and Irrigation Hydrology research group, which is part of the Hydrology research program.
Kumar earned a B.Eng. (Hons) Chemical Engineering in 1974 at the University of Ranchi, India. This was followed by a Mtech Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1977 and then his PhD Chemical/Reservoir Engineering at the University of Sydney in 1982.
Kumar’s key skills lie in:
- Groundwater hydrology
- Hydrogeology, groundwater flow and solute transport modelling
- Irrigation and integrated water management
- Brine evolution and migration in salt disposal basins, salt lakes and salinity management
- Density affected flow, seawater intrusion modelling
- Colloidal transport in porous media and permeability reduction
- Project leadership
Current Research
Projects that Kumar is currently involved in include:
- Integrated water management - This group is using the Burdekin as its focus catchment and aims to provide innovative solutions to production and environmental impacts caused by the movement of water, sediment and solutes (salt, nutrients, pesticides and other contaminants) across and through landscape.
- Groundwater hydrologist, groundwater flow and solute transport dynamics and modelling related to seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers, Burdekin delta.
- Colloidal transport and aquifer clogging.
- Managing saline disposal basins for usefulness of salt storage in regional basins.
- Evaporation basins management for salt storage in irrigation areas: on-farm and community scale disposal basins.
