Amgad Elmahdi is a Water Systems Modeller working in the Surface Water and Groundwater Interactions research group, within the Hydrology research program.

Specific research areas/capabilities

Amgad has eleven years experience in all aspects of hydrology and water management.  This experience has included Integrated water resources and Basin Management,  Irrigation Demand management, Hydrological economics and biophysical relationship, Surface-Groundwater  Modelling, Water banking approach, the investigation and assessment of surface water pollution problems, Water reallocation model, Irrigation and Drainage management, Multi Criteria Evaluation Techniques for water future scenarios, Water and yield relationship and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and water information database.

Recent Professional Experience

Amgad has worked in Egypt, Italy, and Australia dealing with a range of issues in surface and groundwater hydrology. His recent appointments include:

  • 01/07 – present Research Scientist, CSIRO Land and Water
  • 08/03 – 12/06 PhD candidate The university of Melbourne
  • 10/00 – 07/03  Associated Researcher Strategic research unit-Ministry of water resources and irrigation Egypt

International Projects Experience

Amgad was also involved in working on different research projects with interdisciplinary teams.

2003 -2007 NBCBN Project Nile Basin Capacity Building Network - River Engineering. Funding Agency: Dutch Government and the World Bank through the NBI-Secretariat.
Researcher in Regional Research Cluster on GIS and Modelling: The project aims are:

  • To facilitate and regionalise joint research on River Engineering in the Nile basin countries.
  • To connect specialised institutes and experts in the field of River and Hydraulic Engineering.
  • To enhance communication between these experts and institutions.
  • To improve the accessibility of water education and training in River Engineering in the region.
  • To raise awareness among politicians and professionals active in this field.
  • To set up a regional information centre and database that can be easily accessed by all users.

2002- 2003 Researcher  NAWQAM Project - National Water Quality And Availability Management. Joint Canadian- Egyptian water quality programe project to improve water data storage, data retrieval and data analysis through greater management of GIS databases in order to improve implementation and dissemination of water information by the Egyptian National Water Research centre  to / from stakeholder in  a form suitable for influencing policy dialogue and policy formulation.

  • 2000 M.Sc. in Land & Water Management, Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies - CIHEAM- MAIB Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari, Italy
    Thesis: (Amalgamation of GIS and Environmental indicators for decision Making in Water resources management).
  • 1997-1998 Post Graduate Diploma in Environment Conservation and Renewable Resources DSPU, Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Greece
  • 1997 M.Sc. in Water-Ecological studies, Faculty of science, University of Mansoura, Egypt
    Thesis: (Water pollution and Ecological relationship study in the NILE Delta – Egypt).
  • 1993 B.Sc., Mansoura University, Egypt

Awards/Achievements

  • 2003: The Best Master Thesis in water resources Management (July 2003). Awarded by the  Ministery of Water Resources and Irrigation. - Egypt.
  • 2004: The Best student presentation at NRM natural resource modelling congress, melbourne dec 2004.
  • 2006: Australian Harmony Hero (campaign to promote Australia's cultural diversity) awarded from DIMIA and SBS
  • 2006: The Best paper and presentation at ERE conference, Sydney Dec 2006.
  • 2006: Nominated for Australian of the year Awards 2007 for his intercultural work.
