Water Use and Reuse Stream Projects

Development of ASR Opportunities in Melbourne
(a Smart Water Fund project)

Introduction

Hydrogeological exploration drilling in South East Melbourne at a possible ASR site in melbourneThis project was a response to Action 5.34 of the Victorian Government White Paper, Securing our Water Future Together, “The Government, water authorities and local government will investigate the potential for aquifer storage and recovery for Melbourne”. While ASR has been widely applied in SA, WA and NT additional confidence was needed for its successful application in Victoria. A Melbourne pilot project was seen as the way to proceed and this needed an approvals framework that was initially missiing and a map of the potential for ASR in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

Objectives/Scope

Using available hydrogeological information, develop maps of subsurface storage potential for the greater Melbourne area and make recommendations for the most prospective ASR sites, in relation to demand and ability to harvest water.

Through a process of consultation produce a Code of Practice for commercial-scale aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) of mainswater, stormwater and reclaimed water that will simplify licensing.

As a second stage (post July 05), one or more sites will be selected to demonstrate subsurface storage by well injection (ASR or dual well systems) or with surface infiltration methods. The demonstration would involve design, investigation, construction and commission of at least one full-scale demonstration ASR site, taking account of pre-treatment requirements, and the proposed licensing framework.

Activities

  • Develop code of practice / technical guidance document
  • Develop broad scale mapping
  • Finer scale mapping in targeted areas
  • Site selection
  • Implement ASR demonstration project
  • Write up results and run a workshop.
