National Irrigation Award for Townsville Researcher
Irrigation scientist Philip
Charlesworth from CSIRO Land and Water in Townsville has been awarded
the Australian
National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (ANCID) 2002 Travel
Fellowship. The award was presented by the Federal Minister for Agriculture
Hon. Warren Truss at the recent ANCID conference in Griffith. Philip's
research has focused on drip irrigation, irrigation control, and soil
moisture monitoring.
In announcing the award, ANCID stated that Philip's application demonstrated
a strong knowledge and understanding of the irrigation industry and provided
a unique and insightful vision for the future. Philip plans to travel
to Tonga to be part of a HortResearch
(NZ) project addressing pesticide leaching to groundwater. This project
is very relevant to Philip's main research - sustainable management of
the Burdekin delta groundwater. On his travels, Philip will help provide
useful and specific outcomes and information for the irrigation industry
with local, regional and national significance.
