What soil is that?

A beautifully illustrated new reference guide is available through CSIRO Publishing to introduce readers to Australia’s remarkable soils and landscapes. It reveals their great diversity and explains why a soil’s basic properties and position in the landscape should guide our use of the land.

Australian Soils and Landscapes was written by Neil McKenzie, David Jacquier, and Katharine Brown of CSIRO Land and Water, along with the late Ray Isbell. The book provides an introduction to soil properties, processes, and their signifi cance for land use and management. It includes a well-illustrated compendium of the most common soils in Australia, showing soil profi les and their associated landscapes and detailing usage and soil properties. Striking photographs illustrate associated landscapes.

This book will be a valuable resource for land managers and farm advisers; land resource assessment agencies; professionals and researchers in forestry, agronomy, hydrology, ecology and planning; soil scientists; soil testing laboratories in universities, government agencies and anybody who is fascinated by Australia’s rich heritage of soils and landscapes.
