All about LNAPL in the subsurface

CSIRO is offering an opportunity for groundwater remediation consultants, project managers, contaminated site owners and regulatory compliance officers (in both the public and private sector) to learn about the distribution and recovery of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL) in contaminated aquifers.

The practical two-day course will run in major capital cities (Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide) in February/March 2005. A one-day option is also available – as the second day is for those who are interested in how the theory is incorporated into the modelling process, or would be expected to interpret or perform modelling for remediation design and site evaluation.

The course is designed to provide an advanced understanding of LNAPL behaviour in the subsurface as well as the significance and implications of LNAPL with respect to site remediation. Course leaders Dr Randall Charbeneau (University of Texas), Mark Adamski (BP America) and Colin Johnston (CSIRO Land and Water) will explain how LNAPL enters, occupies and migrates in the subsurface using a recently revised conceptual model for LNAPL behaviour in the subsurface. The new conceptual model is supported and explained using the latest research and work from the American Petroleum Institute (API), the US Environmental Protection Agency, CSIRO and BP.
