Highlights

Dr Philip Charlesworth awarded grant to collaborate with international partners

  • Dr Philip Charlesworth from CSIRO Land & Water was awarded a grant from the Australian government to collaborate with international partners on key research. The award was announced by Senator McGauran on 13 February. Dr Charlesworth is investigating irrigation management to protect groundwater resources from sea water intrusion and nutrient leaching. Visit to Lower Burdekin by Dr Mike Bonell, Chief of the Hydrological Processes and Climate section of the UNESCO Division of Water Sciences, Paris, France.

  • Dr Bonell visited the Lower Burdekin with Drs Keith Bristow, Kumar Narayan and Thabo Thayalakumaran from CSIRO Land & Water on 17 February 2004. At this time Dr Bonell was able to meet with representatives from the North and South Burdekin Water Boards, BBIFMAC, Sunwater and other organisations, as well as visit some of the field sites, weirs and river pump stations.

Visit to Lower Burdekin by Professor Harry Vereecken, Director of the Institute Agrosphere

  • On 12 February, Dr Kumar Narayan, Dr Philip Charlesworth and Carsten Schleeberger (visiting German student) from CSIRO Land & Water accompanied Professor Harry Vereecken on a visit to the lower Burdekin region, incorporating visits to the North and South Burdekin Water Board field sites in the Delta. It was an excellent opportunity for the Professor to talk to Water Board Managers Bill Lowis (SBWB) and Graham Laidlow (NBWB) and to discuss water resource management issues in the lower Burdekin Delta. Professor Vereecken was also able to see a few artificial recharge pits in the area.

ANCID 2003 – “Catchment companions growing together”

  • The Lower Burdekin Initiative was well represented at the ANCID 2003 Conference held in Shepparton, Victoria from 19 to 22 October. Presentations on the current projects being undertaken were made by George Nielsen (Canegrowers), Robin Juffs (CSR), Keith Bristow (CSIRO Land & Water) and Philip Charlesworth (CSIRO Land & Water).

Northern Australia Irrigation Futures (NAIF)

  • The Lower Burdekin Initiative will be a case study site for the new NAIF project. This project will deliver a framework for use by policy makers, regulators, managers, and investors to ensure irrigation is developed in a sustainable manner across northern Australia. The project will use past experience and new knowledge to build an understanding of key landscape attributes (including soil and water resources, climate, vegetation, rivers, near shore marine environments) relevant to sustainable irrigation in tropical systems. This knowledge will be used to deliver a framework based on sustainability indicators and management criteria at a range of scales (field, farm, district, scheme, and catchment) to support planning, development, implementation and management of new schemes, and if necessary, modification of existing schemes across northern Australia.

Irrigation CRC launches

  • The new Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Irrigation Futures was launched by the Hon. Ian Causley, MHR, in Sydney on Friday 31 October. The Irrigation CRC is funded by the Federal Government and thirteen State agency, industry and university partners, including CSIRO, to initiate and coordinate research into irrigation. During its seven-year life, its research emphasis will be to provide practices and technologies to maximise the socio-economic benefits of irrigation while minimising their environmental impacts.
