Ecotoxicology research at the Cawthron Institute, New Zealand
Louis Tremblay, Cawthron Institute, New Zealand

Abstract
Ecotoxicology has been defined as the study of impacts of anthropogenic stressors on the structure and functions of ecosystems. No doubt a very ambitious definition requiring a multi-expertise approach from a range of key disciplines. Various aspects of ecotoxicology will be covered focussing on approaches using New Zealand species relevant to soil, freshwater and marine environments. Toxicology methodologies based on different levels of biological organisation using biochemical and molecular biology techniques to assess environmental risk will be described.

About the Speaker
Louis Tremblay is an Environmental Toxicologist in the Coastal & Freshwater group at the Cawthron Institute in Nelson, New Zealand. His research involves the development of methodologies to characterise the effects of anthropogenic stressors on the receiving environment. Louis’ main area of interest is the characterisation of the mechanisms of toxicity of microcontaminants on key New Zealand species.

Observing ecosystems through a DNA lens: the practical challenge

Dr Donald Baird, Environment Canada and the Canadian Rivers Institute, University of New Brunswick.

Abstract
Dr Baird's principal research focus is on the development of diagnostic approaches to assess impacts of multiple stressors on freshwater ecosystems.

Current research focuses on two main areas: the development of traits-based ecological risk assessment approaches and the application of high-throughput genomics in biodiversity discovery and ecosystem biomonitoring.
