![]() Perth Laboratory Public Seminar Series 2007The Challenges of Water Resources Management in Laos Sengmanichanh Somchanmavong Tuesday* 10 July 2007 at 3.30 pm, CSIRO Auditorium
This seminar will outline water resources management in Laos. Previous strategic actions and challenges, current activities for integrated water resources management, and future priorities are the major issues that will be discussed. The Nam Ngum River Basin Development project will be described as it is to be the model of the other river basin development management in the country. In addition, the outcomes and learnings from Australia will be discussed in relation to sustainable water resources management in Laos. About the speaker Seng is currently working for six weeks with the Australian Research Centre for Water in Society (ARCWIS) at CSIRO Land and Water as part of an international visitors program that is funded by the International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management (ICE WaRM). She works as a training specialist in the Nam Ngum River Basin Development Sector Project under the Water Resources Coordination Committee Secretariat in the Office of the Prime Minister, Lao PDR. Seng’s background is Public Policy, specializing in Development Administration (Australian National University 2004). She has a range of experiences on project management, public participation, advocacy and communication, across multi-disciplinary areas in new developments. She has some experiences on social impact assessment as well as environmental impact assessment. Monitoring and evaluation is also part of her expertise. She has worked from the community level up to the decision-making level. Seng’s major aim in visiting Australia is to share, learn and experience challenging aspects of integrated water resources in Australia, particularly in the ARCWIS research projects. This includes learning useful approaches to understand public issues and to increase public awareness on water resources management as well as discussing and sharing ideas with a broad range of experts.
