The Jane Gillooly Memorial Award

Dr Jane GilloolyThis award was created in memory of Dr Jane Gillooly, who was a scientist in the Land and Water Division of CSIRO. Dr Gillooly was passionate about further¡ng opportunities for female researchers in the earth and spatial sciences.

The award will continue her enthusiasm and commitment to science by supporting opportunities for early career female researchers to further their scientific and professional careers.

The award is provided by CSIRO Land and Water and administered through the South Australian branch of the Australian Society of Soil Science lnc. (ASSSI SA).

Eligibility

The Award is open to early career female scientists (0-8 years after tertiary graduation) based in South Australia working in the earth/natural environment/spatial sciences, to further their scientific career. The primary aim of this Award is to foster the development of personal scientific and professional skills and knowledge, and is not intended as a source of research project funding.

Membership of ASSSI is not essential, however preference may be given to financial ASSSI members. The Award may be used for the following:

  • to foster research, extension and communication activities;
  • to undertake study tours;
  • attend conferences, if accompanied by other activities/research visits;
  • to undertake professional development courses.

The award’s value

The Jane Gillooly Memorial Award was offered for the first time in 2010; further awards will be granted to one person each year for the years 2011 & 2012.
The award granted will typically be in the range of $10,000 to $15,000.

How to apply

A competitive application process will be employed, therefore applicants will be required to provide:

  • a detailed CV
  • a statement that the proposed activities are supported by the applicant's employer
  • a comprehensive description of the proposed act¡vity
  • justification of how the proposed activity will further their scientific / professional career
  • a detailed budget
  • a report to the Jane Gillooly award committee documenting the experience gained and the outcomes of the award, and a comprehensive presentation to the SA branch of the ASSSI.

Applications will be reviewed by the Jane Gillooly Award committee, appointed annually by the Executive Committee of the ASSSI SA branch and the board of trustees.
