Australian Water Conservation and Reuse Research Program

National Portfolio of Innovative Demonstration Projects in Water Conservation and Reuse

What is AWCRRP?

Rainwater, stormwater, greywater and reclaimed water will form an integral part of Australia’s future water supply. Within 10 years, the Australian Water Conservation and Reuse Research Program (AWCRRP) promises to conserve and generate 1000 gigalitres more water each year from these relatively untapped resources.

CSIRO and the Australian Water Association (AWA) lead the program, together with a wide range of Australian stakeholders and international collaborators. Under Stage 2, a national portfolio of innovative demonstration projects will be supported by research to assist the uptake of new technology through education and training activities, and policy reform. New stakeholders for Stage 2 are welcome.

As Stage 1 is nearing completion, it is time to advise stakeholders and interested parties of the research findings and seek input into future directions.

A series of objectives and timelines were set within this Program and researchers committed to undertake approximately 12 different but inter-related projects identified as important for developing experience in, and growing commitment to water recycling programs across Australia.

The timeline specified that researchers needed to report on their projects (Stage 1) by early 2004 and set objectives for Stage 2 projects. To facilitate this reporting process, AWA is organising a series of workshops to be held in major centres across Australia.

About the Water Reuse Project Workshops

A current update of knowledge on water conservation and reuse - and an opportunity to influence future goals - Workshops across Australia, during May 2004.

The Workshops will provide opportunities for local input into Stage 2 research and the proposed national portfolio of innovative demonstration projects on water conservation and reuse. Projects will run from city to suburb at industrial and domestic scales - and may involve rainwater, stormwater, grey water and/or reclaimed water.

Program Outline

9.00am Water reuse in Australia

Why a national program for urban water recycling and reuse?

What is AWCRRP?
9.15am AWCRRP Stage 1

Five minute presentations on each of 12 reviews, with overview of the most significant issues, gaps and actions needed.
These reviews have been conducted by researchers from CSIRO, Universities, Aust Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, GreenPlumbers and solicitors.

Reviews include:

  • factors affecting social acceptance of reuse
  • the current state of Australian water reuse, issues and barriers
  • the current state of water sensitive urban design
  • integrated water management and water reuse in Australia
  • fate of viruses and other pathogens
  • fate of endocrine disruptors and pharmaceuticals in non-potable reuse
  • new technologies
  • plumbing codes
  • impacts of reuse on food crops, soil and groundwater quality
  • economics and externalities in conservation and reuse
  • policy and institutional barriers, and
  • a manual on contractual arrangements for water reuse.
